I’m thrilled to share with you the newest feature of my blog, The Creatives Q&A. I’m going to be interviewing the best creative up-n-comers in Australia, including photographers, hairstylists, filmmakers, designers, stylists – anyone who contemplates beauty in their professional life. We’ll find out what makes them tick, their inspirations, and of course, their take on beauty.

Starting off this new, exciting series is Jasmine O’Loughlin-Glover, jewellery designer at GALA Curios. Jasmine creates gorgeous pieces that “aim to bridge the gap between sculpture and wearable ornament”. The brand has had huge success; it’s three collections old and has already been featured in Vogue, Russh, Grazia, on AnOther.com, ElleUK.com and more! You may remember her from here and here. Now, down to business…

Describe GALA Curios in three words… WHIMSICAL – WEARABLE – ORNAMENTS.

Jasmine’s latest collection, MONO NO AWARE.

Shot by Carine Thevenau, Styled by Paul Bui, Hair & Makeup par moi.

Tell us about your design journey… I began as a design assistant in the footwear departments of ksubi and Beau Coops, before a chance collaboration with Marnie Skilings for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week gave me the opportunity to create my own range of jewellery…from there, it was all about using this momentum to build my own jewellery label. I probably should clarify that I also have a degree in textile and jewellery design, I guess that has helped!

Favourite part of your job? The rush of adrenalin at the start of each new collection when I am researching ideas and forms, as well as the ability to then to see these ideas through to fruition as objects.

Where do you find inspiration from? The world! All things great and small – nature, art and ideas about the way in which the human body interacts with objects.

What are you working on right now? My next Autumn/Winter collection, based a sort of human vs nature concept.

Most treasured possession? My art & design books, I can come back to them again and again and they never get tired. A constant course of inspiration and account of beauty through the ages.

Which historical figure do you most identify with? Marcel Duchamp – for his whimsical approach to the world.

Jasmine

Your beauty icon? Jaime Bochert. She has a wild, dark, unconventional beauty.

What’s your beauty routine like? Pretty simple! I have one favourite moisturiser, foundation and mascara…and a whole bunch of bright lipsticks.

Favourite products? Darphin Skin Mattifying Fluid, Lancome Silky Mat foundation (in the palest shade available), Maybelline Colossal mascara (mainly for the bright yellow tube), and any bright orange or pink lipstick I can get my hands on.

Favourite place in Sydney to find inspiration? The Art Gallery of NSW. Such a peaceful place, and a beautiful building for beautiful art.

Favourite cafe for brunch? No. 9 in Potts Point, especially the very naughty rhubarb hotcakes and the very naughty staff!

Best dinner in Sydney? Bodega

Favourite escape? Kangaroo Valley, so close to Sydney yet so far removed from all of the hustle and bustle.

And finally, the best place to relax? Rushcutters Bay park on a sunny day with a good book.

Let’s get this straight: false eyelashes (when applied with patience) look incredible (as long as they’re not too long and antennae-esque, of course). Once you start wearing them you will not be able to stop.

These are my faves:

The Shu Uemura Luxe false lashes in Black. The layers of lashes plus the crisscross pattern give you the fullest lashline but they aren’t obvious. It’s ahhmazing.

You know, in an ideal world, we’d wake up at 7am after having gone to bed at 3am because of some magnificent, exclusive event, do yoga and spend an hour getting ready, false lashes included. But seriously, I’d much prefer the sleep-in. Furthermore; I can’t imagine all of that lash glue (albeit super-sensitive surgical glue) to be too good for those wee eyes of ours, so our next best bet is mascara.

In my kit I have eleven mascaras. Yep, ELEVEN! They all have different textures, consistencies and colours and I really couldn’t live without all of them, but right now for the sake of this post and your sanity, I’ll stick to the black ones. I must have tried and tested hundreds of mascaras (ok, maybe 50?) and these are my current faves..

For lashes at the beach, out all night, at weddings or sappy chick flicks, you need waterproof mascara. Easily the best, and the one I know most great makeup artists have in their kits is the “Maybelline Full ‘N Soft Waterproof Mascara” in Very Black. You can buy it from Coles or Woolies, therefore it’s cheap. Bonus!

For good daytime natural lashes that won’t flake and create little craters of black under your eyes, and super easy to remove, I love the Shu Uemura “FibreXtension Mascara” in Xtra Black. It also just seems to disappear (not run, panda eyes) when you cry or remove with water. Amazing.

And finally, for a sexy rockchic, clumpy, heavy lash, there is no better than “L’Oreal Paris Original Voluminous” mascara in Blackest Black. The consistency is really quite runny, the first coat extends the lashes and grabs them together and the second really makes them heavy, so it’s so exaggerated it looks like you blink in slow motion. Crazy.

Are there any others I should be trying??
