THE BEST HAIR MASK

I love this shot – her complexion, her eye makeup, her whimsical headpiece, but there’s one thing that ruins it for me, the ends of her hair. Shocking, totally shocking.

Electrifying even.

The girl needs treatment and she needs it quicksmart.  My pick of them all… Redken’s Real Control Intense Renewal Super Moisturizing Mask. It intensely nourishes with conditioners, proteins and shea butter leaving hair transformed. Perfect for those who don’t give their hair as much love as it deserves, like me!

THE LITTLE THINGS

Sure there’s nothing quite like a La Prairie facial or an Hermes fragrance, but quite often it’s the little, everyday luxuries that really get me excited. I have a massive soft spot for gorgeous soaps, especially ones that come in divine packaging. Here are my two favourites, both from great Australian brands…

The first is MOR‘s Snow Gardenia Soapette. I received it as a gift from my dear friend Marianne at Christmas time and it’s taken me five months to open it up and use it! Gardenias are my all-time favourite flowers so I kept this adorable tin on my desk and sniffed it when I was in need of some inspiration.

My other favourite is Sohum‘s Caramella. Chocolate bean, vanilla husk, white chocolate and buttercream – it’s good enough to eat. The fragrance is sickly sweet (which I love) and the soap cake is a great big block (250g) that lasts and lasts.

The perfect fragrance, stunning packaging, and nice ‘n’ foamy, these two get my tick of approval.

What are your favourite little luxuries?

RAFW #2

Today is the last day of fashion week and I have to say that I’m quite relieved, I think it has been the busiest week of my life! I’ve been so lucky to see so many great shows – my favourites being Romance Was Born, Dion Lee and Karla Spetic – and to interview many brilliant hair and makeup artists.

The most exciting thing I’ve done this week though, is interview some very talented women to find out their fashion week beauty must haves. See what Vogue’s Beauty & Health Editor Sigourney Cantelo, Fashion Editor Meg Gray and Fashion Assistant Ilona Hamer have all sworn by for surviving the busiest week of the year.

My RAFW beauty pick? Mimosa!

Jen Brill’s bathroom cabinet. Amazing.

RAFW

It’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, which means my world right now is madness. Officially it started on Monday, however my first show was last Thursday night. I’ve been doing about six shows each day, and will be reporting on them for weeks to come. I’ve been lucky enough to interview all of the best hair and makeup artists and have so many tips to share with you. Unfortunately I’m going to be a bit quiet on the blog front, however, you can see all of my reviews on Vogue.com.au.

Jacquelyn Jablonski shot by Ben Hassett for Vogue Japan June 2011

In other news, I recently cut my mermaid hair (!!) and Redken spoilt me yesterday and gave me a blow-dry just like Jacquelyn’s – sleek and bouncy. They used the new Real Control Slim Supreme serum and I have to say, it’s great for thick hair, it’s made mine sleek and shiny. Love it!

And last but not least, some blogger collaborations…

The lovely Sophia from MoulinFrock interviewed me here. I told her my top tips and what it’s like to be a beauty writer. It’s definitely one for the beauty obsessed.

And finally, I did Zanita’s hair and makeup for her collaboration with clog-supremos, Funkis. Check out the final shots on their website and over here at her blog.

A bientot!

THE ULTIMATE ANTI-AGING CREAM

Katrin Thormann shot by Horst Diekgerdes for Harper’s Bazaar UK May 2011

There is a miracle cream and it’s not new or exorbitantly priced, it’s sunscreen. I interviewed Dr Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Consulting Dermatological Expert and owner of Tribeca Park Dermatology in NYC, last week for Vogue.com.au and one of his comments that stuck with me was, “recognising that sunscreen is a beauty product as well as a health product will set people on a good path”. No matter how young or old you are, male or female, if you want to look good, have great skin and aren’t keen on that skin cancer business, sunscreen should be the first thing on your face each day.

I’m currently loving Clarins UV Plus Protective Day Screen Lotion SPF 30+. It’s oil free, super light-weight, and can be patted over makeup throughout the day for ongoing protection. It’s seriously wonderful. I’m also still loving Dermalogica’s Total Eye Care SPF 15+. You can get right up to your eye and put it all over your lids without worrying about any funky reactions.

Which sunscreens do you love? Have you found an eye sunscreen with a SPF 30+? I would love to come up with an extensive list for all types of skin so comment away!

ps. A cute boater will also help!

THE CREATIVES Q&A, Vol 1

Hi all! I’m thrilled to share with you the newest feature of my blog, The Creatives Q&A. I’m going to be interviewing the best creative up-n-comers in Australia, including photographers, hairstylists, filmmakers, designers, stylists – anyone who contemplates beauty in their professional life. We’ll find out what makes them tick, their inspirations, and of course, their take on beauty.

Starting off this new, exciting series is Jasmine O’Loughlin-Glover, jewellery designer at GALA Curios. Jasmine creates gorgeous pieces that “aim to bridge the gap between sculpture and wearable ornament”. The brand has had huge success; it’s three collections old and has already been featured in Vogue, Russh, Grazia, on AnOther.com, ElleUK.com and more! You may remember her from here and here. Now, down to business…

Describe GALA Curios in three words… WHIMSICAL – WEARABLE – ORNAMENTS.

Jasmine’s latest collection, MONO NO AWARE.

Shot by Carine Thevenau, Styled by Paul Bui, Hair & Makeup par moi.

Tell us about your design journey… I began as a design assistant in the footwear departments of ksubi and Beau Coops, before a chance collaboration with Marnie Skilings for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week gave me the opportunity to create my own range of jewellery…from there, it was all about using this momentum to build my own jewellery label. I probably should clarify that I also have a degree in textile and jewellery design, I guess that has helped!

Favourite part of your job? The rush of adrenalin at the start of each new collection when I am researching ideas and forms, as well as the ability to then to see these ideas through to fruition as objects.

Where do you find inspiration from? The world! All things great and small – nature, art and ideas about the way in which the human body interacts with objects.

What are you working on right now? My next Autumn/Winter collection, based a sort of human vs nature concept.

Most treasured possession? My art & design books, I can come back to them again and again and they never get tired. A constant course of inspiration and account of beauty through the ages.

Which historical figure do you most identify with? Marcel Duchamp – for his whimsical approach to the world.

Jasmine

Your beauty icon? Jaime Bochert. She has a wild, dark, unconventional beauty.

What’s your beauty routine like? Pretty simple! I have one favourite moisturiser, foundation and mascara…and a whole bunch of bright lipsticks.

Favourite products? Darphin Skin Mattifying Fluid, Lancome Silky Mat foundation (in the palest shade available), Maybelline Colossal mascara (mainly for the bright yellow tube), and any bright orange or pink lipstick I can get my hands on.

Favourite place in Sydney to find inspiration? The Art Gallery of NSW. Such a peaceful place, and a beautiful building for beautiful art.

Favourite cafe for brunch? No. 9 in Potts Point, especially the very naughty rhubarb hotcakes and the very naughty staff!

Best dinner in Sydney? Bodega

Favourite escape? Kangaroo Valley, so close to Sydney yet so far removed from all of the hustle and bustle.

And finally, the best place to relax? Rushcutters Bay park on a sunny day with a good book.

THE PERFECT CAT EYE

Magdalena Frackowiak shot by Liz Collins for Numéro #122

I’ve done many a cat eye in my makeup career and the best tip I can give you for a precise, symmetrical and mess-free flick is… to lightly draw the shape that you want with a black eye pencil then when you’re happy and both eyes are even, paint away with a gel or liquid.  Also, don’t forget, practice makes perfect, so best not to try this one when you’ve only got 20mins to get ready!

ALLURE

The arresting Rachel Rutt.

If you’ve been following me on twitter you’ll know that I did the most exciting shoot on Friday. Shot by Bowen Arico, with clothing from Lands End and hair & makeup by moi, I think this is my most favourite shoot to date.

Simply sensual.

Check out the rest of the images over at Bowen’s website here, and for a really cool take, check out these.

DETOX TIPS

Arizona Muse shot by Paolo Roversi for Vogue China April 2011.

I recently went to the launch of Biotherm‘s newest range (more about that in June) and the theme of the day was ‘detox’. Everything was inspired by the concept of detox – the location, the healthy and delicious lunch, and I’m sure French champagne fits in there somewhere (after all, it is made out of grapes!).

We had a nutritionist speak to us about detoxing for better skin, how to make detoxing delicious, and ways to incorporate detoxing into everyday life. Here are the top 10 detox tips of the day…

  1. Eat food in the broccoli family 2 to 3 times per week (turns out broccoli is a SUPER food – it stimulates digestive function)
  2. Drink H20
  3. Limit caffine and alcohol
  4. Instead, drink dandelion coffee and green tea
  5. Exercise
  6. Drink hot water and lemon juice each morning (it gets the liver functioning better)
  7. Eat fibrous foods
  8. Have a 50-60% alkaline diet
  9. Eat by colour (eat 5 to 10 different colours everyday)
  10. And, get 8 hours of sleep each night

Lots of those we’re already familiar with, but it’s good to keep them  in mind. I guess it’s exciting to realise that you don’t have to starve yourself or eat super-bland food to detox. I’m most excited about this lemon and colour-business, what about you?

FEMME FATALE

Not your regular femme fatale, but an enchantress nonetheless. Even though we’re fast approaching winter here, all I think about are maxi-skirts and maxi-dresses. Make the most of the sun but beware of its harsh rays. Protect the skin with my new favourite facial sunscreen, Kit Cosmetics Mineral Tinted Moisturiser with SPF15. Mineral, sheer and non-greasy – it’s perfect!

MANIA MANIA

A still from Surfer: A Fashion Film starring Crystal Renn for StylCaster.com

Hi folks! What wonderfully crazy month! I have been following the fashion weeks non-stop, writing up a storm and settling into my new role. I’m really looking forward to getting back into Liner Notes – I’ve been shooting quite a bit, have lots of delicious products I want to share with you, and have decided that I am going to feature more Insider’s Insights. I’ve been doing lots of interviews lately (here’s a little something I did with Brad Ngata) and have been loving it, so expect more Q&As with up-and-coming people and brands.

In the meantime, I want to say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Lyna and Melvin from Song For The Mute for winning the LMFF Designer Award. The duo are so kind and talented, they truly deserve this award and I can’t wait to celebrate with them when they return from Melbourne. Here’s Vogue.com.au‘s report of the event. Well done guys!

BOLD GOLD

Since Peter Philips painted eyes gold at Proenza Schouler’s A/W 2011 show last week, I have gone copper crazy! Check out duo eyeshadows in Isolde, Méditerranée, and Balthazar by Nars for a chic, gilded look.

AMANDA

As you know, I don’t really do posts with celebrities, but firstly, Amanda Seyfried is gorgeous, and secondly, oh em gee her hair looks amazing! A very wise hair stylist once told me that if you want to style your hair well, you need to make the texture “like canvas, not silk”. Add product, make it messy, make it sexy. Have a play!
